The 8 billion people whose lives have changed forever from the COVID-19 pandemic deserve truths, not falsehoods, about how this catastrophe started and what must be done to prevent the next one. Removal of ‘Proximal Origins’ from the scientific literature is a necessary first step for correcting the false narrative that has misled the global community about the origin of SARS-CoV-2 for over three years. It is also urgent for rescuing science from misguided personal and institutional interests and realigning it with the public good.
